Alphonso Davies appeared to have suffered a serious right ankle injury and was subbed off after just three minutes of Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga match against Eintracht Frankfurt Saturday.
The Canadian international and former Vancouver Whitecaps academy standout was in tears as he was helped off the pitch and reportedly was heading to an area hospital for scans.
Davies screamed in agony as he twisted his ankle looking to take a step toward the ball at midfield.
After breaking through on the world stage a year ago, helping Bayern win the treble and entering the conversation as the best left back on the planet, Davies has struggled out of the gate this season.
The 19-year-old only played one minute in last weekend’s 4-1 win over newly-promoted Arminia Bielefeld and had a seven-minute substitute performance in a 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League group stage during the week, with French fullback Lucas Hernandez starting in both matches.
"Alphonso's form dropped a bit,” Bayern coach Hansi Flick said, per ESPN. "But he gets all our support. We benefit from his pace, his energy. It's important he gets back on track.”
Davies, who originally moved to Bayern Munich for a reported $22 million back in 2018, was back in the starting XI Saturday, but he suffered what is feared to be ligament damage in the opening minute against Eintracht Frankfurt.
