NEW YORK (Wednesday, May 4, 2022) – Austin FC forward Sebastián Driussi was voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Month for April 2022.
After guiding Austin to a 4-0-1 record in the month of April, Driussi sits tied with Toronto FC’s Jesús Jiménez atop the league’s goal-scoring leaderboard with seven scores. His 10 goal contributions (seven goals, three assists) are the most in MLS with five of them coming in April (four goals, one assist). Driussi’s playmaking ability has propelled Austin to a 6-1-2 record and an MLS-high 22 goals this season, including 11 in the month of April. Austin’s 20 points through its first nine games are the most by an expansion team in their second season since LAFC in 2019 (22 points).
In Austin’s four wins during the month, Driussi scored or assisted on the game-winning goal in two of those matches. Driussi also scored the game-tying goal in Austin’s remarkable comeback against D.C. United on April 16, as the club became the fifth in MLS history to win a match after trailing by two or more goals in the 80th minute or later, and the first to do so since 2018. The Argentine scored in four separate matches in April, joining Toronto’s Jiménez as the only players to accomplish this feat.
Since entering the league in August 2021, Driussi (20, 12 goals, eight assists) is tied for the fourth-most goal contributions trailing only NYCFC’s Valentín “Taty” Castellanos (23), Nashville SC’s Hany Mukhtar (23) and CF Montréal’s Djordje Mihailovic (21).
Driussi is the first player in Austin FC history to receive Player of the Month honors. Austin now becomes the 23rd active club to have a player named MLS Player of the Month.
The club is back in action this week as they welcome the LA Galaxy to Q2 Stadium on Sunday (7 p.m. ET, FS1 / FOX Deportes).
MLS Player of the Month is voted upon by a panel of select national media members in a process conducted by MLS Communications.
