FC Cincinnati have sold out their US Open Cup semifinal against the New York Red Bulls, the club announced on Wednesday.
The USL side, who are vying for an MLS expansion spot, will host the Red Bulls in the Open Cup semis at 36,000-seat Nippert Stadium next Tuesday, Aug. 15. The club only opened sales to the general public on Tuesday, announcing that they sold over 16,000 seats in seven hours on Tuesday afternoon and evening.
Cincinnati have already taken out two MLS teams at Nippert Stadium en route to the Open Cup semifinals, defeating Columbus Crew SC 1-0 in the fourth round before defeating the Chicago Fire in penalties in the Round of 16. FCC drew crowds of over 30,000 for both matches. The club advanced to the semis by virtue of a 1-0 quarterfinal win at NASL club Miami FC on Aug. 2.
Should they beat the Red Bulls, Cincinnati will host the Open Cup final on Sept. 20 if the San Jose Earthquakes win at Sporting Kansas City in Wednesday night’s semifinal (8:30 pm ET | SportingKC.com). If Cincinnati and SKC both advance, SKC would host the final.
