UPDATE: LA Galaxy's Bradford Jamieson IV replaces Jordan Allen after the latter picked up a right hamstring injury in the 83rd minute of RSL's 2-0 win on Saturday vs. Houston.
The biggest star in American soccer history picked the next generation of Major League Soccer’s leading lights on Monday, as Landon Donovan named 22 players to the roster for next week’s Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game.
Donovan will coach the Homegrown team against the Club América U-20s at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park next Tuesday, July 28, one day ahead of the AT&T MLS All-Star Game against English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.
The Homegrown roster mixes established MLS starters and US youth national team prospects with up-and-comers from around the league. The most notable names include Chicago Fire midfielder Harry Shipp, US Under-20 internationals Tommy Thompson, Jordan Allen and Erik Palmer-Brown, and the Colorado Rapids’ Shane O’Neill and Dillon Serna. (The latter two will have the opportunity to play the Homegrown match in their home stadium.)
FC Dallas lead the way with three selections on the Homegrown roster, with Hoops goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez, midfielder Alex Zendejas and forward Coy Craft all making the squad. Four other teams – the Rapids, Columbus Crew SC, Orlando City SC and Real Salt Lake – placed two players on the roster.
