We’ve all turned to various hobbies while isolating during the COVID-19 pandemic, and matters are no different for Inter Miami CF goalkeeper Drake Callender. His is certainly unique, though.
The MLS rookie has taken to Instagram to perform poems, with the passion truly beginning during his sophomore year at the University of California, Berkeley. Callender delved into his off-field talent during a recent South Florida Sun Sentinel story.
“That fascinated me a lot because I started learning maybe through my writing I could change my emotional state based on what I was writing," Callender said. "I could go from sad and write my way into feeling better or dealing with that emotionally better. I kind of [opened] Pandora's box with this."
Not all of Callendar's poems get shared publicly, of course, but the 22-year-old estimates that he's penned roughly 150 poems across the past two-and-a-half years. For more on the goalkeeper’s passion, check out the entire story here.
On the field, Callender awaits his MLS debut after signing with Miami as a Homegrown Player this past December. Those rights were acquired via trade from the San Jose Earthquakes, with Callender also part of the US U-23 men’s national team player pool.
