Multiplatinum musician and D.C. United Owner Yo Gotti, along with Washington, D.C. native and Grammy nominated musician Wale, to headline first feature
NEW YORK, N.Y. (August 23, 2023) – Major League Soccer (MLS) will reimagine the sport’s post-game tradition with custom features called, The Jersey Swap, showcasing the intersection of culture, soccer, and music. The first feature, which debuts today across League channels and The FADER, highlights multiplatinum musician and D.C. United owner Yo Gotti, and Washington, D.C. native and Grammy nominated musician Wale.
As part of the soccer culture, players swap jerseys at the end of the match as a symbol of mutual respect. The custom piece centers around change agents, influencers, and soccer stars, introducing their own version of the jersey swap tradition.
In the premiere spot, hip-hop megastars Yo Gotti and Wale share their perspective on music, hometowns, and soccer’s stature as a vessel for connection, relevance, and entrepreneurship.
“The Jersey Swap custom features is a great example of soccer’s ability to unite people from different cultural backgrounds,” said Yo Gotti. “I’ve seen it firsthand at D.C. United games as players and fans from all walks of life come together to support the sport they love. Soccer’s impact is powerful and I’m proud to share my appreciation for the game’s influence in this episode with my guy Wale.”
Additional segments will spotlight different clubs and drop periodically through the end of the season. Each feature will highlight local icons and their connection to their respective MLS club.
“The Jersey Swap content embodies what makes MLS and the culture of our soccer community unique,” said Jesse Perl, MLS VP of Brand & Marketing. “We are taking the iconic rituals of our sport, and creating new traditions, that bring in new personalities and conversations.”
The custom features are produced in English and Spanish and will run across MLS owned and operated channels as well as other third-party channels.
The Jersey Swap is produced by Cornerstone agency, MLS’ creative agency of record.
