NEW YORK (Monday, July 18, 2022) – Minnesota United FC midfielder Emanuel Reynoso was voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Week presented by Continental Tire for the 21st week of the 2022 MLS season.
Reynoso registered his third brace in five games as part of the club’s 2-0 win at Allianz Field against D.C. United (Watch Highlights from His Performance Here). Since June 28, Reynoso is the only player in MLS to score at least two goals in three separate matches and has led Minnesota to wins in all three of those games. The midfielder is the first player in club history to score at least two goals in three separate matches during the same season. His six goal contributions (four goals, two assists) in the month of July are tied for the most in MLS, and his four goals rank behind only New York City FC’s ValentĂn Castellanos. Reynoso was one of two players to score a brace in Week 21 action.
Reynoso scored his first goal of the match in the 13th minute when he played a header to Luis Amarilla who produced an acrobatic flick into his path, which Reynoso then volleyed with the outside of his foot and into the corner of the net (Watch Here). Just after halftime in the 50th minute, Reynoso extended the Loons lead to 2-0 after Amarilla cut past a defender in the box and laid off a pass to the Argentine, who took one touch to create space and then delicately placed a shot past the sprawling D.C. United goalkeeper (Watch Here).
Reynoso leads all Minnesota United players in goals (nine), assists (five) and key passes (54) in 2022. The dynamic midfielder is one of five players in MLS to have at least nine goals and five assists this season. Additionally, his 54 key passes rank second in the league, behind only the New England Revolution’s Carles Gil (67). Reynoso has provided a goal or an assist on eight of Minnesota’s 12 goals (66.7 percent) in their current five-game unbeaten run (four wins, one draw) since June 28.
Reynoso is the second Minnesota player to win MLS Player of the Week presented by Continental Tire this season, joining goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair who took home the award in Week 3. This is the first time that Reynoso has been named MLS Player of the Week presented by Continental Tire in his career and he is the sixth different Loon in club history to earn the honor.
Minnesota will look to extend their five-game unbeaten run when they travel to face Houston Dynamo FC at PNC Stadium on Saturday, July 23 (8:30 p.m. ET, MLS LIVE on ESPN+).
The MLS Player of the Week presented by Continental Tire is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio, and online media.
