Minnesota United starting goalkeeper Tyler Miller will miss the remainder of the 2020 season after undergoing hip surgery, the club announced Wednesday. Additionally, the Loons have recalled goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair from his loan to San Antonio FC in the USL Championship.
Miller was acquired via trade from LAFC this past January, then was signed to a new contract through 2022 with a club option for 2023. He’s started every game for Minnesota this year, and now has 68 starts for his MLS career after previously serving as a backup for the Seattle Sounders from 2016-17.
As for St. Clair, he’s yet to make his MLS debut after being selected No. 7 overall in the 2019 SuperDraft out of the University of Maryland. Instead, the 23-year-old Canadian has made 10 professional appearances across loan stints at San Antonio and USL League One side Forward Madison FC.
As for other goalkeeper options, the Loons also have Greg Ranjitsingh and 16-year-old Homegrown signing Fred Emmings on the roster. Ranjitsingh, 27, featured in two games for Orlando City SC last year.
This all continues a goalkeeper evolution for Minnesota, who last year saw Vito Mannone voted as the Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. The Italian shot-stopper's loan wasn't extended, and he's currently out of contract after his deal at Reading expired.
Minnesota return to action Friday when hosting Sporting Kansas City (7:30 pm ET | MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in US, on DAZN in Canada). They recently advanced to the semifinals of the MLS is Back Tournament and are second in the Western Conference standings.
