Kamara Passes Landon Donovan, LAFC Put Six on the Board
Kei Kamara wasted very little time making history again as his goal in the 33rd minute saw him eclipse Landon Donovan (145) for the second-most in the regular season in MLS history. Kamara, who scored on Wednesday to tie Donovan, produced a trademark header when he met a Mateus Bogusz cross and flicked his finish into the bottom corner of the net (Watch Here).
Bogusz has been in-form over the past two months and provided the opening goal, an assist to Kamara, and LAFC’s fifth goal in the 6-2 victory. The Polish midfielder has now contributed at least one goal or one assist in each of the last eight matches, joining Carlos Vela (11 from 2009-10) as the only players in club history to do so. Bogusz is having a career-year and is now at nine goals and five assists as LAFC (37 points, 11-4-4) moved up to first in the Western Conference for the first time this season.
Cucho Hernández Catalyzing Columbus Attack
The Columbus Crew are roaring back into form with five wins in their last six matches after they defeated Sporting Kansas City 4-0 on Matchday 22. Leading the victory was none other than Cucho Hernández, who bagged his first hat trick of the season, making it five goals in his last three games.
Hernández joined Josef MartĂnez (six), Hany Mukhtar (four), Chicho Arango (three), and Christian Benteke (three) as the only active players with at least three regular-season hat tricks. Dating back to last season all three of Hernández’s hat tricks have come in his last 20 games. During that span, he has scored 19 times, joining Stern John (1998-99) as the only players in club history to accomplish this feat.
Road Test Not a Problem for Sebastián Ferreira
Houston Dynamo head coach Ben Olsen’s return to D.C. United saw forward Sebastián Ferreira break out with his second, third, and fourth goals of the season to propel the Dynamo to a 4-1 victory. For Olsen, it marked the first time returning to the nation’s capital to face D.C. United after he spent 334 regular season matches in charge of the side from 2010-20.
For Ferreira, the hat trick was a welcome one after battling injury throughout the beginning of 2024, limiting him to just 176 minutes. The Paraguayan forward became the first player in club history to score a hat trick on the road and the seventh overall in team history. Houston’s win moved them to 4-4-2 on the road this season and up to seventh in the Western Conference.
Three Again for Djordje Mihailovic
A club-record acquisition by the Colorado Rapids, Djordje Mihailovic has been worth every penny since returning to MLS. The midfielder has been the focal point of the Rapids attack, which has lifted a resurgent Colorado team in 2024 under first-year head coach Chris Armas.
After scoring a hat trick on Wednesday, Mihailovic followed up a three-goal performance with one goal and two assists as Colorado thwarted CF Montréal, 4-1. Mihailovic became the first player in club history with consecutive games of at least three goal contributions and the fourth all-time to total at least 15 goal contributions in the club’s first 20 games to begin a year. Only Lionel Messi (three times) and Luciano Acosta have had back-to-back games with at least three goal contributions in 2024.
Red Bulls Youngsters Get It Done
The New York Red Bulls continued their second-longest home unbeaten streak to begin a season (6-0-3) by taking down Toronto FC, 3-0. With players like Lewis Morgan away participating at UEFA Euro 2024, the Red Bulls turned to their youngsters to keep their unbeaten home run alive.
For New York, five different players aged 22 or younger scored or assisted in the match – Dennis Gjengaar (20, goal), Elias Manoel (22, goal), Cameron Harper (22, goal), Wikelman Carmona (21, assist), and Noah Eile (21, assist) – which was just the second time this has happened in club history (July 24, 2022). Of those five players, two of them were brought in via the U22 Initiative in the winter prior to the season – Eile and Gjengaar, who have been key contributors in 2024.
