FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – It seemed like the only thing going right for the New England Revolution of late was their health.
That was until the 25th minute of their match against Chicago on Saturday night when Andy Dorman took a hard knock that may sideline the veteran for some time.
Down 1-0 and moving deep into the Fire’s zone, Andrew Farrell softly dropped a pass into some open space, and as Dorman cut in to drive the ball toward net, Chicago defender Bakary Soumare, coming on to block the shot, rolled into the Revolution holding midfielder. Dorman crashed to the turf holding his right knee but was able to limp off the pitch after about a minute.
Attempt to get back into the play in the 28th minute, Dorman took a few steps before sitting back down near the sideline with a grimace of anguish.
“I don’t have the update on Andy yet, but it was significant,” coach Jay Heaps told the media following the 1-0 loss. “Andy’s a tough guy, so we’ll find out more in the next couple days.”
Shortly after Heaps' press conference, Dorman left Gillette Stadium with the aid of crutches, officially diagnosed with a right knee injury that will require additional evaluation before the team takes off on their two-game road trip.
After going unused in the season opener at Houston, Dorman started the next 14 games for New England before serving a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation. He sported the captain’s armband during the stretch of games that Jose Goncalves missed with a right quad strain.

“Hopefully it’s not that bad,” said Goncalves after the game. “For us, the most important thing is to keep everyone healthy. We know that Dorman is out, and obviously it’s difficult for us.”
Second-year man Scott Caldwell, who came on for Dorman following the injury, might be the likely choice to the fill the defensive-mid role, having started 23 games there a year ago. Heaps could also call on A.J. Soares, who Heaps turned to in a surprising defensive midfield role against Philadelphia earlier this season when Dorman was unavailable.
New England, currently on a season-long five-game losing streak, face the LA Galaxy on Wednesday and FC Dallas on Saturday and will likely have to do without the veteran presence of Dorman.
