The New York Red Bulls have signed Brazilian goalkeeper Carlos Coronel on loan from Red Bull Salzburg for the 2021 season with a club purchase option, it was announced Friday.

Coronel, 24, will occupy an international spot on RBNY’s roster upon receipt of his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate.

“We’re pleased to have Carlos join us on loan for the season,” head of sport Kevin Thelwell said in a release. “He is a very good goalkeeper, has experience with Gerhard’s style of play and a familiarity with MLS. Carlos further solidifies our group of goalkeepers, and we look forward to getting him acclimated within our group.”

Coronel previously spent part of the 2019 season on loan with the Philadelphia Union, appearing in four games with three starts. He’s appeared in 11 games for Red Bull Salzburg, including time in the UEFA Champions League, playing under former RBNY coach Jesse Marsch. Current New York Red Bulls coach Gerhard Struber was formerly a coach in Salzburg's academy.

After starting with the Red Bull Brasil Under-20s, Coronel joined FC Liefering, a second-division Austrian club affiliated with Red Bull Salzburg, as an 18-year-old. He played in 67 Erste Liga matches for the club and preserved 20 clean sheets.

"Carlos brings experience of playing in the Champions League and has shown that in big games he can bring stable performances and leadership on the field," head coach Gerhard Struber said in a release. "He strengthens our goalkeeper group and brings good energy to our team."

Aside from Coronel, RBNY also have David Jensen and Ryan Meara as experienced options at goalkeeper after they shared the workload in 2020. They also signed 20-year-old Luca Lewis earlier this offseason.
