A rare scene unfolded at Exploria Stadium in Orlando before a penalty kick shootout was to decide a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal clash between Orlando City and NYCFC.
After the teams finished 120 minutes of play tied 1-1, the penalty kick shootout was set to take place on the opposite end of the stadium from "The Wall," the Orlando City supporters section. So "The Wall" went to the shootout.
Fans made their way through the concourse and flooded into the seating behind the goal, which was closed off for the match. After stadium security initially attempted to redirect fans away from the section, they relented as a wave of supporters took over the seats (watch below).
The result? Orlando won the shootout 5-4 boosted by the raucous support from their home supporters as Lions goalkeeper Adam Grinwis made two big saves, including the decisive stop to win it. It made for a memorable moment in Orlando City and U.S. Open Cup history.
Orlando City move on to face rivals Atlanta United in the USOC semifinals with the host to be determined in a draw conducted by US Soccer.
