CF Montréal scored early and held onto a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon over Vancouver Whitecaps FC in their 2022 home opener at Stade Saputo.
Djordje Mihailovic found his first goal at Stade Saputo in the first minute when he struck a ball sent into the box by Alistair Johnston, getting Montréal on the board early.
Montréal doubled their lead in the 47th minute when Sunusi Ibrahim and Mihailovic combined before Romell Quioto tapped in his third goal of the season.
Brian White got the Whitecaps back in the game with his first goal of the season by whipping a loose ball into the back of the net following a 65th-minute corner kick.
Tosaint Ricketts equalized in second-half stoppage time with a header, but the goal was disallowed after Video Review found the Canadian veteran was offside.
Goals
Three Things
- THE BIG PICTURE: CF Montréal couldn’t wait to be back in their home stadium and made it show with an early goal and an early second-half goal. Focused on the regular season after their Concacaf Champions League exit, Montréal have now won three consecutive games. The Whitecaps came close to picking up a late draw. Instead, they find themselves with four straight road losses to start the season.
- MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Fans had to be at Stade Saputo on time to watch Montréal’s first goal of the game. Djordje Mihailovic volleyed home a ball sent to him by Alistair Johnston to open the score for the hosts.
- MAN OF THE MATCH: Djordje Mihailovic continued on his mission to become a versatile threat for CF Montréal and perhaps earn a spot on Gregg Berhalter's USMNT roster in Qatar this November. Mihailovic found his first goal at Stade Saputo and assisted Romell Quioto's marker.
