Report: Luciano Acosta drawing interest from MLS Western Conference teams

Luciano Acosta - DC United - Close up

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

Luciano Acosta’s days with D.C. United might be over, but the Argentine playmaker might not be done competing in Major League Soccer.

Acosta, who is out of contract following the 2019 season, was offered a deal by D.C. United during the season, which means the club retains the 25-year-old’s MLS rights.

That’s significant because, according to a Washington Post report, a pair of Western Conference teams have reached out to D.C. United regarding Acosta, the former MLS Best XI selection.

D.C. United would likely receive financial considerations in exchange for Acosta’s rights.

The former product of the acclaimed Boca Juniors youth academy was the subject of a well-publicized failed transfer to French giant Paris Saint Germain last January.

Perhaps as a result, Acosta’s form faltered during the 2019 season, which saw him register six goals and an MLS-low two assists. That came off the heels of a sensational 2018 in which Acosta combined with Wayne Rooney (forming the dynamic LuchoRoo partnership) and the result was a 10-goal, 17-assist campaign which saw D.C. United make a stunning second-half run into the MLS postseason.

Over the course of four seasons with D.C. United, after arriving on loan from Boca, Acosta had 24 goals and 35 assists in 126 regular season games, including 109 starts.
