After a couple days of confusion, we finally know just what Sebastian Giovinco was doing after his goal in Toronto FC’s 2-0 victory at the New York Red Bulls on Sunday.
Giovinco celebrated his penalty kick that gave TFC a 1-0 lead by kick starting and revving an imaginary motorcycle. As you can see, the Italian’s move looked a bit bizarre:
No one quite knew what to make of the celebration, and, until Wednesday, no one quite knew where it came from. That’s when an Italian outlet got to the bottom of Giovinco’s antics.
According to CalcioMercato.com, the 2015 MLS MVP was visited in Toronto this winter by Italian TV personalities Pio e Amedeo, who have a show in which they visit Italian VIPs and athletes who live abroad. They have a shtick, too, pretending to show up to their visits without any money, forcing the VIP to pay for everything on the trip.
Pio e Amedeo apparently weren’t fans of Giovinco’s previous celebration, and suggested he try to “kick start a Vespa” after scoring his first goal of 2016. They got their wish on Sunday, and MLS got one of its stranger celebrations in recent memory.
Check out their video below:
