Sacramento Republic FC defeated MLS opposition in the U.S. Open Cup fourth round for the second consecutive year, as they defeated the Seattle Sounders 2-1 in extra time at Papa Murphy's Park on Wednesday.
The USL side, which defeated Real Salt Lake in the Open Cup last year, doomed the Sounders to their first loss against lower-league opposition in the tournament since 2013.
Seattle played a reserve-heavy lineup, and goalkeeper Bryan Meredith was key to keeping the visitors in the match, even after going down a goal in the second half.
Cameron Iwasa scored the go-ahead goal at the hour mark, as the teams scrapped in a competitive and largely evenly played match. But Sounders substitute Harry Shipp scored a deflected goal in second-half stoppage time to take the game to the 30-minute extra time.
Extra time was relatively tame, but Sacramento clawed their way to a second lead on the night, as substitute Jure Matjasic scored in the 115th minute to seal up the win for the home side.
