It's not often that you see the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers come together as one for a common goal, but that's exactly what the bitter Cascadia Cup rivals are doing with a new joint project between the clubs they're calling SEAvPDX Week.
With the first meeting of the season between the sides scheduled for May 17 postponed, the Sounders and Timbers will instead mark the historic rivalry with a week of unique content and competitive opportunities for the fan bases. During the week, fans will also be encouraged to donate to their club’s selected community COVID-19 relief charity – the United Way of the Columbia-Willamette for the Timbers and the Seattle Sounders FC Relief Fund for Sounders FC – with the ability to donate directly online.
Check out a breakdown of the full schedule below.
- Tuesday: Digital content maestros Richard Farley (Portland) and Joseph Mondello (Seattle) each produce their top 5 list of moments that define the rivalry, which they'll post for fans to discuss and debate.
Wednesday: Farley and Mondello will deliver more exclusive written content, this time in a long-form oral history of the first meeting between the sides of the MLS era, which took place on May 14, 2011. The Sounders will also be producing a special edition of their weekly podcast "Wingin' it with Zak and Brad" in which hosts Steve Zakuani and Brad Evans will be joined by former Timbers Jack Jewsbury and Ryan Pore to discuss memorable moments and insider stories.
Thursday: It'll be a battle of each team's sibling duos, as Cristian and Alex Roldan will take on Portland's Diego and Yimmi Chara in a Newlywed game-style competition to see which pair knows each other better, hosted on each club's official website. Later that evening, fans of both teams will get to duke it out on the virtual pitch in the free FIFA 20 Showdown hosted by Matcherino. Seattle's Stefan Frei will then face Portland's Bill Tuiloma in FIFA 20, before the two clubs' eMLS representatives will compete for their shields. (Streams of all the FIFA action will be on Twitch).
Friday: The clubs will host a live interactive trivia night with questions about the rivalry and the Pacific Northwest. The challenge will start at 4 pm ET and fans can participate by logging on with their mobile devices on Crowd.Live/SEAvPDX.
Saturday: Each club will air a memorable rivalry match from its archives. For the Sounders, it'll be the Rave Green's 4-2 victory over the Timbers at Providence Park on August 24, 2014, while the Timbers will play their first MLS win over the Sounders on June 24, 2012. The matches will air at 10 pm ET.
