Sporting Kansas City's defense of the U.S. Open Cup remains alive, as they defeated FC Dallas in a back-and-forth 3-2 win in the Round of 16 on Saturday at Children's Mercy Park.
FC Dallas took the lead in the 18th minute, as Michael Barrios took a shot from a very narrow angle that was saved by Sporting GK Adrian Zendejas. But the rebound bounced back to Barrios, who chipped it up over Zendejas, and Carlos Gruezo got a touch on the doorstep to ensure it would be a goal.
Sporting tied up the game just before halftime, as Ike Opara’s cross was poked in by Daniel Salloi. The Homegrown Hungarian added a second goal in the 66th minute to put Sporting ahead.
Dallas tied up the match, through Roland Lamah’s deflected effort, in the 77th minute. But Sporting had the last word, as Yohan Croizet’s golazo on the volley won the game and sent Sporting through to the next round.
Sporting will play the winner of the Houston Dynamo-Minnesota United match on the road in the quarterfinal round next month.
