The Italian soccer federation announced some bad news for Sebastian Giovinco on Monday, officially ruling the Toronto FC attacker out of Italy's Euro 2016 qualifiers this week due to the adductor injury that forced him out of TFC's 2-1 win over Montreal on Saturday.
“Giovinco was forced to leave the Coverciano training camp due to an injury suffered during Saturday’s MLS match against Montreal, and he is now ruled out of the upcoming European qualifiers against Malta and Bulgaria,” read a statement from FIGC (Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio) as the Azzurri gathered at their headquarters in the Coverciano neighborhood of Florence for the first of three training sessions leading up to Thursday's meeting with Malta.
Giovinco left Saturday's match in the 51st minute but traveled straight to the airport and on to Italy as scheduled in order to allow FIGC staff to make their own evaluation of his status.
“We've been treating it a bit over the course of the week, and he started feeling it progress a little bit in the game,” said TFC head coach Greg Vanney on Saturday.
Giovinco has been a rousing success in his first MLS season, notching 17 goals and 13 assists in 25 league matches and vaulting into contention for league MVP honors.
