TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
The Vancouver Whitecaps have signed 2021 first-round MLS SuperDraft selection David Egbo, the club announced Monday.
Egbo joins the Whitecaps from the University of Akron, where he's coming off a standout three-season run with the Zips. The 22-year-old Nigerian-born forward has signed an MLS contract with club options through 2024.
"David has a very good profile. We like his work rate and qualities that can complement our current group of attackers," Whitecaps coach Marc Dos Santos said in Monday's release. "This will be his first experience at this level and we will provide him the opportunity to grow and develop. We are very pleased to add David to our team and look forward to welcoming him to Vancouver in the coming weeks."
Egbo racked up 21 goals and 13 assists in 35 starts and 56 appearances during his three seasons at Akron, leading the conference in goals and shots per game, and placing second in assists per game in 2019. The Whitecaps selected him in the first round with the No. 9 overall pick in this year's SuperDraft.
He will officially join the roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate, medical, work permit and visa.
