Coming off their best-ever season in MLS, it's shaping up to be an active offseason for Minnesota United.
Adrian Heath said as much in an interview released Saturday with Andy Greder of The Pioneer Press, as Minnesota's fifth-year coach discussed how the club plans to move forward given offseason departures that include Kevin Molino and Luis Amarilla.
"We’ve identified a couple of guys that we’d like to bring in," Heath told Greder. "We are actively pursuing them and we are confident. … We think we need to bring in maybe four players and are going well down the road in that pursuit of them players. It’s ongoing. If we bring in the players that we are looking for then, we think we are going to be in a really strong position."
As for what areas of the field the club needs to target specifically, Heath said "you don't have to be Einstein to work out" that striker is one clear area of need, with Amarilla now officially on the move back to Ecuador. The 25-year-old came to Minnesota last season with plenty of hype and pedigree, but didn't wind up having the anticipated impact in an injury-ravaged 2020 campaign.
"At this moment in time, that is the one area (striker) that is glaring at you when you put our (depth chart) up on the board," Heath said.
Heath delves into a wide range of other topics in the interview, including the statuses of veterans Ike Opara and Ozzie Alonso, as well as thoughts on Minnesota's crushing 3-2 defeat to the Seattle Sounders in the 2020 Western Conference Championship.
