The Chicago Fire announced on Wednesday that veteran winger Patrick Nyarko suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee in the final stages of Chicago's 2-1 loss to D.C. United on Saturday.
Nyarko has been ruled out for an estimated 6-8 months and will undergo surgery once the swelling subsides.
The Ghanaian, who notched his 35th career assist on Harrison Shipp's 67th-minute goal at RFK Stadium, had just returned from an extended spell on the sidelines due to a knee sprain. He was making his 200th competitive appearance for the Fire.
“Knowing the work he put in to get back and help us this season, we feel awful for Patrick,” said Fire head coach Frank Yallop in a statement. “We saw his return to form over the past few weeks and fully support him in his recovery efforts.”
Nyarko finishes 2014 with one goal and three assists in 17 MLS appearances.
